My Life Summed Up In A Digital Short
Sometimes life is a cyclone, with events and happenings swirling so quickly balance becomes difficult. I’m currently swirling in my own mini twister, so throw me a bone and allow me a Lazy Blog Day. It’s been a while since I’ve invoked one.
I posted the following video on Facebook, but at the time, I hadn’t yet announced my birth on that platform, and the video got about as much play as a middle-aged woman. So I’m reposting it here. It’s one of my favorite Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts and stars Andy Samberg and Paul Rudd, who could probably make me laugh just by yawning and blinking. The video is called “Stumblin’” and is therefore apropos to my book-marketing approach thus far. Enjoy!

Wow…I think that’s everyone’s life in 2012! My life goal is to achieve the exact opposite of that! Paul McCartney is a mighty good sport
I laughed out loud at your middle aged woman comment
I figured as a middle-aged woman myself, I was allowed to make that comment. Especially since I’m still stumblin’ about.
Super video … and fitting for a Monday morning.
This was actually last Thursday’s post, but it is probably more fitting for a Monday. Especially one in which the Eastern part of the country is bracing for a storm. Hope it’s not too horrible. Thanks for stopping by!
that bad Carrie? Just as well I’m in Oz – you can’t knock over my beer!
Oz, huh? At least you have a wizard to guide you.
Why can’t my stumblin’ be like theirs…cute, good exercise, fun, funny…and well paid?
Haha–probably VERY well-paid.
ok, i loved that. my favorite part was ‘stumblin’ past 3 different kinds of bears…’ absolutely hilarious. xo
Thanks, SM! I love Paul Rudd. Cracks me up with his boy-next-door antics.
they’re both great. it was fun to watch…
Loving you blog! I’m following!
http://www.fashionforlunch.wordpress.com
Thank you. Nice to hear.
about as much play as a middle-aged woman, oh that made me laugh. And your comment on my blog about your hair…love your humor!
Thank you.
I figured I could get away with that line given I AM a middle-aged woman.
Now you’ve got to do a video of you stumbling around too! My brother used to walk around like that. He’d bang into walls just walking down the hallway. Hope you have lots of fun with that tornado. You might feel tossed around for a while but I’m sure you’ll land in a fairy tale place.
Does this fairy tale place have chocolate? I hope so…
I joked to an earlier commenter that I wished I had the nerve to create a video clip like this of me stumblin’ along marketing. But I’d be way too chicken.
Of course! If it’s a true fairy tale place, it would have to be covered in chocolate. I’d probably be too chicken too but it looks like a lot of fun to do!
Great video. Thanks for the chuckles. Hey, you got to be doing something right–from here, things are looking pretty good for you.
Thanks. In that case, I’ll keep stumblin’ away.
What is your next novel about? Sure you got published BUT WHAT’S NEXT? HURRY UP. Kidding. What is it about?
I’ll only say it involves medical stuff and a killer. Never a good combination…
Hahaha! Thanks for the early morning laugh!
I wish I was the type of person who could put together a clip like this of me stumblin’ around while I schlep my book around, but sadly, I’m not. Then again, it would probably only get a couple You Tube hits. On the other hand, the dork factor might guarantee a few more…
Lazy blog day, and you still attract a load of commentary. Once again, Carrie Rubin exhibits her WordPress dominance!!
Haha. Yeah, right. It’s only because I visit lots of blogs. It’s a give and take, right?
How funny. And I love that Rudd (?)–the guy getting out of the bed–looks ridiculously like one of my son’s friends, right down to the comical personality. Enjoy your Lazy Blog Day. You’ve earned it, I’m sure.
Thanks! Andy Samberg is actually the one getting out of bed. He does kind of have a every-guy kind of face. A goofy face.
I didn’t want to use ‘goofy’ to describe said son’s friend, but yep–that’s it. Both have a winner smile.
Don’t worry–I won’t tell.
That’s good to know. lol. I’m not as nice
Stumblin’! I can’t believe I’ve never used that word to describe how my kids walk every day. Well, now I know and I’ll be using it!
I feel caught in a tornado too on my end, mostly on the personal end but it messes up the professional side too since my brain is too distracted to work well. Nobody wants to be stuck in this situation, but we just have to deal with it, right?
Yes, we do. And at least my tornado is a fun one. I’m enjoying it (mostly), just a lot of new territory for me. Feels like I’m always doing five things at once. But I suspect you know all about that.
No, I don’t know, because you see, I always try to keep my list up to 4 things max. It helps a lot.
Very smart.
I like the “naughty” middle aged woman line. – Lazy blog day deserved. Hope you had fun.
Thanks. Just wasn’t feeling the tides of creativity.
I’ve had a couple of lazy blogging days. You’re perfectly allowed. I like those two SNL guys, too. Hope your marketing is coming together. That’s a lot on your plate.
Thank you. I’m starting phase two now that the paperback is out. But I don’t mind a few stumbles, as long as I mostly stay upright.
Im not a huge SNL fan, but that short was funny. Hope the tornado you’re in is at least pleasant at times Carebear.
xo
Oh, it’s pleasant. And new and exciting. But just a bit crazy.
Hope you had a very good lazy blog day. Andy Sandberg cracks me up, and this one was new to me. Very funny. Thanks!
It was a lazy blog day, but sadly not a lazy day. And now I’m bushed. I think I’ll reward myself with a couple hours of mindless TV tonight. In fact, I have an episode of SNL taped, but sadly, no more Andy Samberg.
Happy lazy blog day! Love that one too.
Thank you.
If you get book marketing figured out, please fill me in. I too and stumblin’. More fun to write than it is to promote.
Maybe the two of us should make our own stumblin’ video. It might be popular on You Tube, but sadly, probably not for the reasons we want it to be. But I’m open for being a laughing stock. How about you?…
I may already be one!
Hey, I have the skills to stumble and make a youtube video. We’re set.
We should all get a few lazy blog days. Actually, sometimes I take six in a row… I don’t let myself go more than seven though. And Paul Rudd is so cute and so funny. Easy to root for him.
P.S. Do I get to use sentence fragments on lazy blog days?
Absolutely! In fact, I enjoy sentence fragments and use them quite often. They add a little drama to the paragraph, I think.
Love it. And you’ve more than earned a Lazy Blog Day, Carrie. Enjoy it!
Thank you!
That video shows how we go through most of life…stumbling. We learn along the way (but hopefully don’t knock that many people over).
Yes, some of us likely do more stumbling then others, but maybe this makes us stronger. At least that sounds good.
That was a lot fun! :+) Funny Video! Did I see Big foot too? I may have to just play that video again. Life can be a whirl wind at times. Hold On I guess or maybe just let your arms flail that may be better advice.
For sure–arm flailing may keep me from falling. I’m past the point of caring what I look like.
Everyone needs some down time once in a while. Your turn. Besides, I’m wondering if there aren’t normal cycles of productivity for humans? Like you don’t want a car from the assembly line on a Monday or Friday? Manufacturers shutting down from mid-Nov to the 1st of the year? Squirrels gathering nuts for the winter? Writers pulling down the awnings til the climate is ripe? Just a thought.
Unfortunately, I’m not getting any downtime–the time I saved writing a post is going to other endeavors. But it’s all good–I ain’t complainin’. In fact, I think I’ll go collect some nuts. Good suggestion.
Ahahaha! Oh Carrie! I know you feel this way but I’ll bet you’re getting through this one step at a time very smoothly.
I dropped my paperbacks off to my local bookstore yesterday, and I couldn’t help but feel like a fraud. Do we ever get over this?
You wrote the book because you were driven to write it, needed to write it and now you want people to read it. The only way that can happen is if you let people know it’s available. What is it specifically that makes you feel so ‘bad’ or ‘fraudulent?’ You’ve worked your tail off to get this far with your book.
I think it’s because I’m something else in another life. I never started out as a writer. Makes me feel like I’m faking it somehow. I know other writers have said the same thing. Perhaps it takes a few books under one’s belt to shake this feeling.
You’re a writer now
without a doubt…
I’ve heard some really famous authors talk about feeling this way. I could see why you would. Of course I’ve felt this way — I make a joke out of things and say I have a home made book — somehow that works for me! Keep on steppin’ Carrie! I’m glad you’re talking about it at least.
Thanks Sandee. Hopefully my feeling of fraudulence will lessen as I write more, but for now, I feel pretty fake. “Home made” book. I like that.
Love that one. Hope you get out of that cyclone alive so you can see the book rise up the US charts
Yes, that would be lovely, even if a bit delusional.
thanks so much for sharing I loved it .. and maybe I could join them stumblin through life
If I was brave enough, I could make my own Stumblin’ video–stumbling through the bookstore as I leave them copies of my book…
stumbling past the till making sure they pay you
Haha! Thanks for the laugh out loud on that one.
good hope you didn’t have seeds in your teeth
Well, if I did, only my laptop saw them.
My life, all day everyday. Sorry you’re stuck in a cyclone right now, and hope you make it fairly unscathed!
Thank you! But it’s a good kind of cyclone–just wish I had a little more confidence and know-how in this book-marketing twister.
I have a friend, Julian Gallo, who has written a few books and knows some things about book marketing. Super nice guy, and I’m sure would answer any questions you had. Twitter: @JulianGallo66
Here is an interview he did about self-publishing so you can get an idea of his marketing “style” so to speak. http://expatspost.com/creative/a-twist-in-the-plot-julian-gallo-discusses-his-new-novel-and-gives-his-view-on-the-the-reality-versus-perception-of-self-publishing/
Good luck!
Thanks for that link. I appreciate it! I’m not self-published, but it feels like I am, since with the smaller presses, the onus of marketing is still on the author. I’ll give that article a look through later. And congrats again on being FP’d.
No problem! And thanks
Thanks for that laugh. I feel the same way a lot of the time. But you are doing awesome with your book marketing. Seriously, I am very very impressed.
Thank you. I appreciate hearing that, especially from you. Now I need to start getting to some of those writer’s conferences, but as I lamented to you before, I also have medical and public health conferences to keep up with, and there are only so many times a mother can up and leave.
Very true. Maybe you can do one in the summer and make it a family trip? Thrillerfest is in Manhattan in July–tack on a few days for you and the family to see the city? Just a thought.
That’s right–I forgot that one is in July. I’ll have to look into it.
I love Paul Rudd too. I think he’s the cutest thing ever. And funny. Love me some funny!
Oh, I love me some funny, too! Nothing beats a good laugh, and Paul Rudd always delivers.
Paul Rudd is always great.
Did you see him in “Wanderlust”? There was a scene with him talking dirty while looking at himself in the mirror–I was laughing so hard, I literally cried. Felt like a fool in the theater. Then again, what else is new?…
Haven’t seen that movie yet. He’s great when plays the straight man, he has a Bob Newhart-esque quality.
Yeah, he does. Never thought about that before, but it’s very true.
Hilarious!
You sure you want a bone thrown at you? That would probably hurt. How about some fluffy marshmellows instead?
Enjoy your day, I hope it refreshes and recharges you.
Thank you. And yes, now that you mention it, let’s go with the marshmallows instead…
That video was exactly the dose of silliness I needed this morning – thanks for the laugh. But “…got about as much play as a middle-aged woman”… hey, I resemble that remark!
Yeah, I figured since I was a middle-aged woman, I could make that crack. But I’m by no means generalizing. To those who can still get some ‘play’? You go, Mommas!
I meant to say, “You go, Ladies!” Middle-aged woman does not mean one has to be a mother.
LOL! It was a metaphorical “Mommas”.
That it was.
Loved this, Carrie and hope you have a great catch-up day. I can relate to this video so much — I’ve pretty much done this, stumbled, my entire life. Every once in awhile, I get it right.
.
Yes, and so what if we collect a few bruises along the way?
I had no idea Paul Rudd’s hips moved like that. ; ) So sorry your life is hectic right now. Here’s hoping your weekend is S-L-O-W.
Thank you. A little break would be nice, but I’m certainly not complaining. I knew I’d have a second phase of marketing tasks when the paperback came out.
And yes, Paul can really move those hips. That guy always makes me laugh. I saw him in the movie “Wanderlust” and actually cried I laughed so hard in one scene. Kind of a naughty film, but I thought it was hilarious.
My favorite Paul Rudd moment is in Forgetting Sarah Marshall when he is teaching Jason Segel how to surf. I can laugh just sitting here in my office thinking about how funny that was.
I forgot about that one! Very funny. I should go back and watch that again.
Hilarious! I may use that for my Friday post.
And they were having lots of fun – I hope you can find fun in your marketing adventures. Along with a Paul McCartney cameo…
Now, if I could get Paul McCartney to do a cameo at my upcoming book signings, that would be something. Always thinking you are…
Hysterical video. TY for sharing. My kids will love this one!
Thank you. Luckily this one can be shared with younger kids. Some of the other SNL Digital Shorts, not so much (my sons think the D**K in a Box one with Justin Timberlake is hysterical; then again, why wouldn’t a teenage boy find that funny?…)
Thanks for a good laugh! Enjoy that lazy day, hope all is well
Thanks! All is well, just busy.
That was a good laugh.
And you totally deserve a lazy blog day. Hopefully you can spend some of it with the next novel!
I hope so. I’ve been trying to work on it an hour each morning before I open up any social media. This morning, I was not successful…
Well, it is hard to avoid social media on posting days…. I never get as much done since I try to get to the comments during the day if I can. And in your case, that’s a lot of comments needing replies!
Yes, it can require a bit of a time, but I enjoy it!
Cyclones…we have two going on plus a kitchen renovation…so ‘stumbling’ was very appropriate!
Know of anything called ‘seething’…as when the cost of the justice system means we can’t bring brother in law to book for making off with his mother’s money.
Oh, that sounds horrible. How frustrating that must be. ‘Seething’ is right. Sorry, I have nothing for that, but I feel your pain. And a kitchen renovation on top of things. Ick.
