Quotes
Here is a list of my favorite quotes. Sorry to inform you the selection is not very sophisticated. Or even inspirational, for that matter. It is merely a collection of quotes I find funny or useful or in-your-face insightful, with a few dignified ones thrown in for good measure:
“You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.”―Eleanor Roosevelt (and Dr. Phil)
“I love mankind; it’s people I can’t stand.”—Charles Schulz
“Perfectionism is the enemy of done.”—derived from Voltaire quote
“Have no fear of perfection–you’ll never reach it.”—Salvador Dali
“It sucks to suck.”—my niece and likely countless other teenagers
“You can’t fix stupid.”—my husband and likely countless other men
“Don’t do anything half-assed.”—me and likely countless other parents
“Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it.”―David Starr Jordan
“Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing.”—Optimus Prime from Transformers
“Old age isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative.”—Maurice Chevalier
“Twenty years from now you’ll be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than the ones you did do. … Explore. Dream. Discover.”–Mark Twain
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.”—W. C. Fields

Maurice is a wise man.
I agree. A few years ago, I was complaining of another birthday approaching, and my step-father said, “Well, it’s better than the alternative.” Such simple words, and yet I haven’t complained about another birthday yet. Well, not much, anyway…
I like the first quote!
:-)
That’s true!
Isn’t it, though? It sounds simplistic, but once I heard that, it made life easier.
Thanks for dropping by!
I love a good quotation. Your quotes above are winners, particularly Optimus Prime’s.
I have collected memorable quotes for years. I thought about putting a quotation page on my own site, but my taste in quotations is not exactly in line, thematically, with the snide misanthropy so often found there. I’d like to share a few here. I originally had a long list, but in respect to your readers (and you), I’ll just include a half-dozen or so.
“For what is it all but being hatched,
And running about the yard,
To the day of the block?
Save that a man has an angel’s brain,
And sees the ax from the first!”
Edgar Lee Masters
“Men seem to be born with a debt they can never pay no matter how hard they try. It piles up ahead of them. Man owes something to man. If he ignores the debt it poisons him, and if he tries to make payments the debt only increases, and the quality of his gift is the measure of the man.”
John Steinbeck
“And like a dying star is every work of your virtue: its light is always still on its way and it wanders — And when will light no longer be on its way? Thus the light of your virtue is still on its way even when the work has been done. Though it be forgotten and dead, the ray of its light still lives and wanders. That your virtue is your self and not something foreign, a skin, a cloak, that is the truth from the foundation of your soul, you who are virtuous.”
Friedreich Nietzsche (This passage is of particular significance to me. The first few lines through “work has been done” are inscribed on my mother’s headstone)
“A gentleman can live through anything. He faces anything. A gentleman accepts the responsibility of his actions and bears the burden of their consequences, even when he did not himself instigate them but only acquiesced to them, didn’t say No though he knew he should.”
William Faulkner
“I’m determined to stand whether God will deliver me or not.”
Bob Dylan LA Times Interview 11.22.01
“Even Ringo and I knowing at fifteen that Grumby, or whoever he was, was a coward and that you might frighten a brave man, but that nobody dared frighten a coward.”
William Faulkner (I absolutely believe the truth in this statement, and hold it near & dear to my heart. I’ve mentioned it to people and they absolutely DO NOT get it).
Thanks for your indulgence.
My gratitude to you for raising the bar exponentially on my dismal quotes page! I will admit, however, that my preference for the concrete has made some of the abstract themes in these quotes less understandable. But with a little cerebral strain, I’m able to decipher most of them.
I really do like the Nietzsche one, and truly believe his words, despite what my light hearted joking on this blog might imply.
Thanks so much for taking the time to add your favorites. Appreciate it!
“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” Theodore Roosevelt. I like short and sweet Quotes as well. “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Eleanor Roosevelt.”
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.”—W. C. Fields
Ah W. C. Fields nice choice.
Oh, I like those quotes. Thanks so much for sharing them and for commenting on a few of my posts. Appreciate it!
i think my sister and i contributed to the ‘sucks to suck’ quote!! mike sent my mom a shirt and i decided to see what my famous aunt’s website was all about!! love it and miss you guys!
What a nice surprise to see a comment from my niece! And yes, Missy, you are the niece I’m referring to in this quote. Don’t you feel honored to have made the list? Thanks for stopping by to pay me a visit. I can now add one more family member who has actually read something on my blog. It’s a short list…
i feel very honroed! not as honored as my aunt having her own blog! mike sent my mom the shirt so i had to check it out and i must say-its very funny! i enjoy reading it! grandpa would have a heart attack! miss you guys and wish you could come up for the 4th!
Thanks, Lexi!
I, too, love quotes and have got a category dedicated to them on my blog. I like the very first on your list, not only because I kept repeating it to my BF in various ways for , but also because (like most people, I think) I sometimes find myself wondering what ‘those’ people think of me.
It is actually quite liberating to follow that quote. If you realize people are likely not thinking about you, but rather are focused on their own insecurities and doubts, then it is easier to stop the constant worrying and rehashing we often face in a social world.
Thanks for commenting!
LOVELY…….:)
Thank you!
I never bumped into that first quote before. Thanks for opening my eyes to a truth right in front me that had gone unrecognized for so long.
When I first heard that on Dr. Phil several years ago, a light went on. It sounds silly to say, but that concept helped me stop worrying so much about what other people thought. Because, as he points, they are most likely not thinking about you! Thanks for visiting!
I love a good quote – I often used literary ones when I was writing my daily blog during the NaNoWriMo challenge, they gave me some great ideas.
Thanks for stopping by my blog, keep up the good work
Thanks! You too!
My favorite: “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot.
Ooh, I like that one. Very relevant to my own situation. Thank you for sharing it!
Fun idea. I do love a good quote.
Thanks! I tend to prefer them short, sweet, and to the point..
